School Sport Program
Surf Education & Skills Program Held Over a School Term
- 1 - 1.5hr p/w over school term
- Typically Terms 1 & 4
- Manly, Dee Why, Cronulla, Wollongong or Bondi
The modules of the surf Awareness and Surf skills course are the basis of our School Sport program, which is conducted over a school term during sport periods.
Participants will be able to advance their skills through repetition, building confidence and by experiencing a great variation in surf conditions. The school sport program caters for all school students, by working within pre-selected groups, enabling the kids to work to their ability with their peers of similar level.
The programs always result in the kids having big smiles on their faces on the way back to school, from the exhilarating effects of the ocean, achieving their own personal goals and exercising in nature’s playground
Note that the Surf Survival Award Program can also be integrated into the Sport Program as a selective program for those who wish to qualify for surfing school sports.
Each session is planned around the conditions on the day, therefore we are able to make the most of each variation in the surf, knowing that we have the luxury to complete other activities throughout the chosen duration of the program.
Variations include:
- Tides – Usually the opposite each week, higher tides will allow for more opportunity to practice skills with less waves in deeper water and less water movement, whereas lower tides provides more waves, shallow sandbanks and more water movement
- Wave conditions – smaller waves. larger waves, rolling waves, dumping waves, no waves provides us with so much variation
- Wind conditions – Onshore wind, will mean it will be choppy with messy waves, whilst offshore winds will make the conditions smooth and the waves cleaner.
- Rips & deeper gutters, which always vary – are a great way to educate students, particularly the predictable rips on our chosen locations. Rips can be used practically to allow the kids to safely navigate the surf, away from waves. However sometimes and at some venues, the rips will not be suitable for groups that are not working to a more advanced level.
